101DS Concept Art:
Human Character Designs &
101 Dalmatians Easter Eggs
by Margaux Zinsner
We have more concept art to show from the scoop by Mel_toons! A while ago, concept art for the background humans in the show had been discovered by fellow community member @ChelleDoggo.
Not just a few of them like last time, but most of them can be acessed in the portfolio from French artist Margaux Zinsner's art website. There is so much content 101DS-related to choose from, break down and dive into, so we'll be showing the biggest highlights of her portfolio, including the painting from “Who The Dog You Think You Are” along with throwbacks to the original 101 Dalmatians, with artwork of Pongo and Perdita. And it's not just human artwork alone. There are also a few other assets within the treasure trove of Margaux's work. Let's see what today's newspaper has to offer for that. Be prepared to scroll down and take it all in, Dalmatian fans!
101 Dalmatians Continuity:
I'm sure many of you have already spotted this artwork of Pongo and Perdita throughout the series, and of course from the most notable episodes "Dog's Best Friend" and "London, We Have Problem (Part 1)"!
It's so amazing that despite the show's bubbly, gumball-esque art-style, Margaux did her justice to ensure that the two grandparents who risked their lives to save the first generation of the Dalmatian family matched closely to how they looked in the original animated film as possible!
For the next two art-pieces, we have a beautiful illustration of the Prince Dalmatia from "Who the Dog Do You Think You Are?" and a real kicker: The wedding photo of Pongo and Perdita alongside their human pets Roger and Anitta! It's easy to miss, but it can be spotted in "London, We Have a Problem (Part 2)" while Doug is rummaging through the attic to identify the source of the De Vil's scent.
Human Character Designs:
Starting off, we have Mr. Fuzzy! You may have already known by now that in the 101 Dalmatians Universe, the humans and dogs somehow share the same physical, facial appearance. Mr. Fuzzy and Dylan are no exception.
And if that wasn't enough for you, we also have a plethora of concept art of the background characters from the show, not to mention that we get to know who most the characters' names are!
Human character design for a woman named Dotty from the episode "Girls' Day Out". Funny, that we never usually see her as the type of person who chooses red for fashion.
The receptionist from the Pooch Etiquette contest named Blanche from the episode "My Fair Dolly".
The crazy cat lady from the barge in the episode "Walkies on the Wild Side". Seems like she has some rather fancy wardrobe that we sadly never seen her wear (At least, we're assuming they were never used scanning through each episode)
The BullDozer Driver from "Snow Day" looks like he's been through his own phase of physical appearances! I wonder if those unused designs are his co-workers, or relatives?
Here we can see the designer figuring out the look for the Firefighter captain, Walker. You can definitely see the variety of initial designs she went through.
The Make-up artist from "Woof Factor".
.
And next up is Lucy! Of all the human characters that went through various design phases, this character has officially broken the record with the most concept art designs. Lucy went through a lot of more variety of designs, through hairstyles, outfits, uniforms, accesories as you can see here.
And believe us, Lucy has had a REAL taste in fashion with each wardrobe Margaux had given her!
Here, we see MUCH more character and personality for Lucie (She seemed to have given a name change like Dolly) in regards of her character expression. The way she's holding that activist sign in that pose really makes her look badass!
Clementine as she appears in the episode "Doggie Da Vinci" alongside Dotty.
Arabelle's human pet also went through some changes too... There's no telling how much she had to pay for that plastic surgery bill to look like her dog.
The Postman seems to have a bit more messy look to his hair in contrast to his more shaggy one. I guess this must be the result of being ambushed by those spotted rascals one too many times.
Portia's pet human Glumgoth seemed to have gone through his, or her actually, phase of gothic fashion and design. It's interesting because we always assumed Glumgoth was a guy, but the early concept art proves us otherwise!
The male police officer also had a share of early character designs as well. Goodness, he looked like he really needed to cut back a few pounds judging a few of his earlier appearances! For the rest of this concept art-piece, the character designs on the top look like there were plans for multiple police officers working on the force to appear in the show. In the end though, only the wide and stout female made the cut as Apollo's horse rider.
Next we got a set of three human characters from top to bottom: Stuart, Shirely and Richard.
A concept art for Patrick. Actually, we've heard of another person whose named Patrick. Only that he's not a human. You get the hint, right?
Finally, we have two human characters that you may probably never find in the show, regarding how closely you look in the backgrounds of each episode. One being the girl with a umbrella, and the other being the quirky old lady. We imagine that the lady is likely the earlier appearance of the barge lady. For the umbrella girl on the other hand, it's really sad that she's the only human character to never appear in the show. She had such a lovely umbrella. Now that we've given you a rundown of several human concept art, let's take a look at the last section: Assets for the show and miscellaneous content!
Misc/Assets.
These are the close-up snapshot illustrations of human characters like Dotty, the make-up artist, and the shaggy beard human, that were made specifically for the episode "Doggie Da Vinci". You can tell that Margaux went all the way in putting each layer of depth and volume in each of these snapshots!
This one is the most appealing, because this is how the characters were animated in an animation technique called, posing-layout. See how each pose was drawn before being traced-over in Toon-boom Harmony!
And that's all we can showcase in today's Daily Puppy Newspaper about human concept art. Margaux Zinsner, like many other talented folks behind 101 Dalmatian Street, has done an incredible job in the design for the human characters. Most of them are very close to how the characters were physically portrayed in the original 101 Dalmatians, while others take on a much more bubbly look. All-in-all, we want to give this talented french artist a huge round of applause for the incredible work she had done and make this newspaper article to boost her recognition amongst the 101DS fandom and Disney itself.
